STUDENTS ACCEPTED TO PARTICIPATE IN OKLAHOMA SCIENCE ADVENTURE

05-23-08

Twelve middle school students from across the state of Oklahoma have been accepted to take part in Oklahoma Science Adventure, a week-long summer field program hosted by the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History. The accepted students were selected from more than 130 applicants statewide to attend this hands-on program that will give middle school students an opportunity to experience the life of working scientists in a variety of different scientific disciplines.

The students accepted to participate are: Madeline Atha, Arnett; Brittany Carpenter, Tulsa; Kayla Carr, Cyril; Dillon Chavez, Oklahoma City; Tanner Crockett, Red Oak; Shane Frazier, Weatherford; Michael Martinez, Watonga; Jeremy Pierson, Healdton; Kimberly Rogers, Durant; Sarah Shook, Lawton; Katlin Wallace, Noble; and Nathaniel Ybarra, Laverne.

Students participating in Oklahoma Science Adventure will spend the week of July 6 through 12 exploring a variety of “ologies” in Oklahoma forests, streams, ponds, fields and quarries with scientists from the museum. The week will culminate with an overnight stay at the museum where students will work in the museum research labs to further study the fossils and specimens that they encountered in their field work. Students also will document their experiences with weblogs, videos and photographs on the museum’s Web site.

Oklahoma Science Adventure is part of ExplorOlogy, a museum educational project funded by the Whitten-Newman Foundation of Edmond. In addition to the week-long field program, ExplorOlogy includes Summer Explorers, a series of classes for children ages 4 to 14 (and some for families, as well) that are based at the museum and run each week from June 4 through Aug. 2.

Additional information about the Oklahoma Science Adventure, Summer Explorers classes, or other programs at the museum is available online at www.snomnh.ou.edu, or by calling the museum education department at (405) 325-4712. The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History is located on the University of Oklahoma Norman campus.
