Apply Now for 2011 Teen Volunteer Program

Teens with an interest in natural history can make the most of their summer by applying for the Teen Volunteer Program at the Sam Noble Museum. The program provides an opportunity for teens to learn about the work of the museum, get a more thorough understanding of Oklahoma’s natural history and ecology, and receive valuable experience working with the public in the museum’s galleries and Discovery Room. Applications are now being accepted for this summer. The program is open to teens entering grades seven through 12. Applications are due April 2. Training will begin on June 1.

The teen volunteer training program will provide general information in the areas of paleontology, ecology and Oklahoma’s Native American heritage. It will prepare teens to work in the Discovery Room and facilitate the museum “Gallery Carts” that feature hands-on informational activities for museum visitors. Teen volunteers also will have an opportunity to learn about behind-the-scenes work in the museum’s collections and laboratories. The training will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. on June 1, 2 and 3. After the three-day training period, teens are expected to serve a total of 30 hours from June 4 through Aug. 5. Teen volunteers are encouraged to continue volunteering at the museum after Aug. 5.

Teens interested in applying for the program can download the form from the museum's Website at www.snomnh.ou.edu/volunteer; contact the volunteer office by phone at 325-1652 or email at volunteer@snomnh.ou.edu to request an application form. Applicants will be interviewed by museum staff members between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 7. Each applicant will receive notice by email or mail with his or her interview time. Twenty applicants will be accepted.

The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History is located on the University of Oklahoma Norman campus. For more information about the museum, call 325-4712, or visit the museum’s Web site at www.snomnh.ou.edu.
